Beehive Hair May Be Hazardous!

Since I've had "bees on the brain," it got me thinking about the famous Beehive hairdo! My aunt's beehive hairdo was famous...or rather infamous.  Aunt Alma had flown from California to Missouri to attend a family reunion on July 4, 1966.  That evening one of my little brother's bottle rockets took off...well...like a rocket, right into Aunt Alma's dyed bright red  auburn, plastered well-sprayed beehive! The menfolk dived into her hair rather unceremoniously to retrieve the rocket. All the aunts started yelling to not "mess up her beehive!"  The men were afraid she'd get injured. The women afraid she'd get mad. What would she do until she went to her weekly beauty parlor appointment, for Pete's sake??   My aunts knew beauty can be painful - it's a fact of life - so what's a little bottle rocket compared to her perfectly coiffed hair? Men!    Here are few examples of past and present -- good and bad -- the last was the original beehive do.  Anyone ever have a beehive hairdo? Audrey Hepburn & Julia Roberts different interpretations of the BeeHive!

Oh, I remember those days! We didn't bother with "teasing" our hair - - - we just went all out and "ratted" it!!!

Love the photo of the child with the beehive on his (her?) head.

Oh, no, my hair is so slippy slidey that no amount of hair spray would make it hold. Cement, maybe! :o) Becky

My absolute favorite is the pic of that sweet little one with the tissue cover on top! :)

Beehive hairdo's -- never quite got the concept. I always wondered how you could keep the hairdo so long without washing your hair.... just another mystery of the hive! :)

Hope all is well in your corner of the hive, Queen Bee! ;)

Oh my lol Photo # 4 takes first prize. Hands down. Love it. Julia Roberts looks quite lovely. She made the bee hive look not quite so alien and pointy...(like the blue-haired wife on the Simpsons)
Thanks for the smile. Fashion...Women....Pain....
They just naturally fall together .
*thinking lacquered pointy brow-stretching hairdos and pointy-toed, spiked, toe-pinching shoes....oh dear. the things women will endure in the name of fashion.

Julia Roberts pulls off that "softer" version of the Beehive do so beautifully!

What a funny story. I never had one. You gave me a good laugh with the baby! Some of them look really pretty, especially Julia Roberts.

That last pic is quite frightening - I can imagine all kinds of creatures wanting to crawl and nest in there! LOL!

I love the "bee bonnet." Never did the bee hive, but did tease a bit the top of my long hair....yikes...

hahaha, i would've loved to have seen a rocket stuck in your lovely aunt's beehive! and those poor, poor men!

i never sported a beehive. i tried and failed. it looked more like a half-destroyed mole hill.

hey baby! Love em.. you know 'hives' are back in now. My daughter is a stylist and most weddings are 'hives' now.

Momma used dippty doo with large rollers then ratted the heck out of her hair, coiled up.. and poof, what a doo.

Pin curls and dippty doo for me and I was set for a week when I was a child. Come saturday night all us girls plopped into a tub, cleaned up, stood in line to have our 'hair done'.. pulled the pins out Sunday morning for church and 'poof' what doo's we had.

Thanks for the past few days of memories.

with love,
Olivia

Love the story! I bet the bottle rocket could have gone off and your aunt's bee hive would still be intact, just some smoke coming from it.

I never had a beehive. But after a windy day in the commuting in the city I have been known to sport a rats nest!

I'm amazed I still have hair from all the years I teased, sprayed, wrapped, curled my hair into a beehive!

I used to do some hair modeling and I remember when I was 18 I had a VW Bug. I had just had my hair beehived up to probably a foot off the top of my head. I went to get in my car to drive to the show and had to slouch down while I drove because my hair kept hitting the inside of the roof! LOL!

Oh, those were the days! Ha! Yes, I do remember the beehive hairdo. I never had one, for my hair was not thick enough to do it and was baby fine, but oh how I wished that I had one when they were so popular! What memories you have brought back. Thanks!

I remember my mom years ago used to wear her hair straight up on her head. I think it was called beehive or something like that! And she would color her hair silver. And now I wonder why she did that. It's all I can do to keep those gray hairs off my head, why would I want to color it that way? lol
