Old Plaster Decor

The OLD, Old Sweetwater Cottage (over 139 years old now) has plaster walls. I adore, am smitten with, am crazy over, am head-over-heels for the look of it...especially when it has the genuine patina. Here are a few examples of old plaster. Anyone have old or new plaster walls?

An example of Old and Plastered....but NOT what I meant at all. *sigh*

  3. Raises hand.
The Fairfield House has old and plastered walls.
Some DIY'ers have no idea what a difference that makes -- even when it comes to hanging a picture. But, I love them. (It truly is an art form.)

    Have a great weekend.

  4. Janean Dear,
Of course, the Cape house has plaster wall from 1939. There is nothing like them. This house is built like a fort. The original insulation which is behind the plaster is shredded corn stalks, which were compacted into a think sheet and attached on the back of the plaster walls. Recycling even then :) The two together make our walls about 3 inches thick! Old houses are great!!!

  5. That kitchen is to die for. I want it. If I say please very kindly may I have it? ;)

No plaster here. This house is only 13 years old. I've always wanted an older house to renovate and bring back to life. However, that isn't one of The Hubster's dreams. :(

  10. We live in a nearly 100 year old house with plaster walls. When we bought it, someone had stuccoed every single inch of wall. We found a master plaster-man from Chile who redid it all for us before we moved in. It took months but the result was well worth it. Not much patina yet, but we love them.

  11. Over the years we've lived in many houses with plaster walls, in North America and in Europe. I'm not a fan of the look of flaking or damp plaster, but I do like the depth or the character that comes with time for plaster.

  12. Yes I love plastered houses too. Very much and I love that kitchen in your second photo, that is my idea of a beautiful kitchen.
The dog is cute too and I know there are days that could be my picture especially when I am grumpy. :)

  22. Our old home had plaster walls, probably around 80 to 100 years old, and I hated them! You could never get a good paint job, and they chipped at the slightest tap. I love my new(er) walls in this house!

  23. our house was built in 1939 and there have been only 3 owners...the second owners put venetian plaster OVER the regular plaster walls..problem is its starting to separate..ive just spent the last 3 days spackling, sanding and rebuilding areas before i paint..i LOVE the look of the aging plaster..just not the pieces that wind up on the floor...ps love your blog!

  24. I love the old plastered walls too. We have had it in three of our houses...and the only downside is trying to hang a picture...oh my...you need to bring out the big guns for that. I have always loved things that are plastered...Uh...except the kind at the end. Hugs- Diana

  26. Hi Janean,

Love all the old plaster walls and all the examples you have shown.
My Grandparents had walls with scrim, and every time when it was windy they would sort of move, which was really spooky.
    The puppydog is adorable.

    Have a lovely week
    Hugs

  27. I love the old plaster look. I had an old house in the city with plaster walls. I had visions of restoring it to its original glory. Then reality set in... plastic is LOTS OF WORK! Now, I'm head-over-heals in love with faux plaster!

  33. I love plaster. I made sure our first home had it when we built it. Our new one doesn't and it shows. Number 3 picture is gorgeous. So many of the things you show "make my heart sing."
