Floorlamp - Function or Form?

We're getting our lake community house ready to sell. It's just too big. We're not sure if we'll try to sell it now or in the Spring, but we're fixing and *staging* our home. It's a big undertaking. Anyway, I needed a new floor lamp to bring in more light, but have found the humble, hard working floor lamp of yesterday has been replaced by the uber-chic artistic floor lamp of today. They seem to be inspired by everything from  leaves on trees to....well.....you'll see.  Do you have a floor lamp? What's its inspiration?  Leaf-inspired lamp; Restoration Hardware's camera tripod-inspired lamp; Asian-inspired lamp; Elk-inspired antler lamp; Retro-inspired lamp; Jewelry-inspired lamp; Trash basket-inspired lamp; Accordion-inspired lamp; Mad Scientist *let me electrocute you* inspired lamp and finally the best....Outta This World Alien-inspired lamp!

  1. What fun you'll have staging your lake house to sell.....good luck.

I have two floor lamps. They're fairly new, but not modern looking. One has a romantic look and the other is old fashioned looking.

The ones in your delightful pictures are too modern for me.....but very interesting.

  2. Janean,
You know that Tennis Girl will go for the red lamp and the red chair. I'll even take the doggie! Very 30's Hollywood looking!

  4. oh my yes those are some wild ones alright!..."taste specific" as they say! ha!...I don't have a floor lamp but if I did it would either be primitive colonial black iron or a neutral style from Pottery Barn!

  5. I was so discouraged when I went looking for floor lamps. I wanted the nice old fashioned kind I remember, 20 years ago. I ended up coming home with one I wasn't wild about but it does okay in a pinch. I hate getting and selling a house. Such hard work and it is so hard to let go of memories.
I will be praying for you.

  6. Wow, those are some quirky lamps. Yes, I have some, especially around chairs for reading. Try gargage sales, or thrift stores for older one. Or, hey, just come to my house.:)

  7. Oh my those are some lamps
Actually I have several of them
visually they don't take us sp much space as a table and lamp and in some spots that is a good thing
I am more traditional with mine though...Ethan Allen
So when are we going to see your staging! Teach us Janean..show us how to do it..you talented lady who should have her own show
    show us some photos
and of the new abode too!

    take care

  9. I have no idea why, but Evan and I both love that huge surveyor's tripod looking lamp from RH. LOL! Thank goodness we haven't hauled it home! LOL!

  10. Those floor lamps are horrid enough to hurt your eyes. Oh how I long for traditional and decorative. I couldn't live with them. Maybe you'll luck into one that you really love.

  11. I have such trouble picking out lamps because they are so many choices.

I tend towards more romantic older styles myself.

Some of your choices today are very interesting Janean.

  12. Good luck - I'm not fond of any of the pictured lamps. I have two in the house - both are vintage 1940-50 and I love them.

    when compared to your sophisticated
    and gorgeous ones!

    good luck with the search.

  14. Hi there Janean,
I didn't know you have a home on a lake! That sounds heavenly! But I guess you must have your reasons for selling...

These are some very interesting floor lamps here! I have a couple of floor lamps that need revamping, and now you've got me thinking...

    I think I like lamp #1 best!

Have fun with your home staging!
    Hugs Sherri:)

  17. Those lamps sure have character, but would not work in my home.
My favorite floor lamp is old (from the 70's, I think) It is shiny brass with a glass table and has a 3way bulb. I sit and read or sew by it, but it is no beauty. I keep thinking I should paint the brass black or white and cover the shade, but there it sits...functional though.

  20. Hi Janean!

I need a new floor lamp in my living room, so let's see...I think I'll take the camera tripod lamp, I really love it! I love "things" made into lamps!

    Hugs,

  21. The lamps are little to modern for my taste. I like old fashioned brass lamps you can paint any color you want. Can't wait to drop by to see your lake house after you stage it.

  22. My friend, we could so use the one made out of deer antlers for Rick's man-cave ~ um, I mean studio :D ~ Personally, I like the straight line look.

  23. Hmmm I rather think a quiet, unobtrusive lamp that casts a beautiful light on a nice room with good "bones" is the way to go. The lamps you showed all give me the creeps, LOL!

Are you staging your home yourself or hiring professionals?

empty and my baby is in BRAZIL!

  25. I've been dreaming about a floor lamp lately. Have a spot for one but haven't seen one that grabs my attention and/or my pocketbook. Love the antlers one, thinking about my brown leather/masculine side. But the pink/red one is uber classy.

  26. I love the camera tripod lamp and I find the mad scientist lamp interesting. We do have a floor lamp. It is beautiful and useful. I think the new lamps of this type are very attractive.

  27. I love what you're doing to the place! Be careful though -- We had somebody come to stage our house when we sold out to be full-time RVers. After she was through, it looked so nice I was almost ready to rethink our decision to sell. (the house was too big -- way too big for two -- and we wanted to travel). We made the right decision, but there was a moment there....

    Good luck. Thsnks for sharing!

  28. Sallie, we just finished every last detail on the two main levels and we did say we would not be disappointed if we had to live in it all dolled up until Spring! LOL. However, we DO want to only have ONE home, so the agents are coming Wednesday to list it (unless the price stinks). *wink*

  29. Hi Janean,
What a thought provoking post! HA! Now you got me thinking! I am a traditional neutral clean line (but not contemporary by any means)decorator. My floor lamp is a bronze with a neutral shade. I think I'm a "boring brown/classic black/beige" type person! HA!
Can't wait to see what you do!
And why in the world would you EVER get rid of a lake home?????? Yikes that's my dream! :0)
Are you Lake of the Ozarks or a Table Rock girl?

  32. Thanks for stopping by to visit. No not Starlight Theatre althought that is a fun place to go. Stella By Starlight was a song sung by Frank Sinatra in the 40's.

  33. I guess you could say I have the old traditionals.
Have fun staging your lake house!

  34. Some of these I just don't "get"!!! I mean, who would ever use some of these? I'm a person who likes "different" but there is a limit to everything. Are you selling your home...or a vacation home? Whichever, I wish you luck. So many homes here are for sale but not selling well. Those that are are not brining what they should. It's so sad for people who need to sell...good I guess for those buying (if they have the money)! I love watching those "staging" shows on HGTV!

  35. I can see that it has been a long time since I did any shopping for a new lamp! Some of these are really neat looking lamps. I do so much estate and garage sale shopping that I never know what the newest styles are. Thanks for showing me what's out there in the real world! laurie

  36. Its so amazing just how many different floor lamps there are out there!!

  37. Oh...I'm having a hard time with this. I'm not a 'modern' girl...I like things a little more traditional but at the same time I like things that are different. I like the second one but I could picture us tripping over the legs. I also like the antlers but I'd hate to have to dust it. The second from last one is different too but again we'd be tripping on it. We have a floor lamp that is just simple black metal with one leaf near the top and a lamp shade that I covered. Works fine for us. Good luck selling your lake home!
Have a great day. Maura :)
