My Dear....

I have always liked writing desks. The whole idea is feminine to me...and tranquil. To sit near a window and listen to the pencil or ink scratch across paper is calming. Since there's no backspace, I am forced to slow my thoughts down. I even own a fountain pen, and though I don't use often, I might just get it out today.  Do you own a writing desk? Does anyone still write letters and send them *snail mail?*

  2. Janean,
I still write notes, on pretty note cards. It truly is becoming a lost tradition. :( I have a Bob Timerlake desk that sits in the Inn. When we move back home, I will take it with me. I love having a desk.
    Have a good Monday.

  4. Good Morning Janean,
Yes I have a writing desk and I too have a fountain pen! My sister in England doesn't have a computer at home so we actually write letters once in a while. It's a nice change but to be honest I'm glad I don't have to do it all the time! Isn't it sad how we've gotten away from that personal touch in correspondence. Love these photo's...thanks for sharing this with us. Enjoy your day! Maura

  5. My mother had a secretary where she would write notes to people. I adore stationary I have anything and everything for that special occasion. I just did a post on lost letter writing. Maybe we could send a card to each other to keep it going!

  6. I miss letter writing! I still do whenever I have a chance but I have to admit it has been a long, long time since I have received a handwritten letter. The doggone computers have made it so much quicker and easier to correspond that we've become spoiled. Another terrible side-effect? My handwriting isn't so terrific anymore. :(

  7. Janean,

I have a writing desk and still write letters, cards and postcards! I just posted about this recently and hosted a postcard exchange. I think sending something "real mail" is so much more personal and something that can be cherished forever.

  11. You always trigger these thoughts...It made me remember my mom sitting at her writing desk and using a fountain pen. She always used a fountain pen. I remember watching her fill it with ink. Her desk was a old antique with hidden drawers and a drop down lid. It was something she loved. Thank Janean, for causing me to remember.

  13. I write my notes at an old Danish desk that survived its journey from Denmark, back and forth to Oklahoma and Pennsylvania and across Canada a few times - then back to Europe twice before settling down by the Ponds. There's another desk that I use, much more utilitarian, and it's where I keep my 'work' computer - no distractions!....and not half the fun.

  17. Letters from the past are treasures and I think it's sad that people don't take the time anymore to write a letter and send it "snail mail".

  19. Writing letters, this is something I like to do throughout the year on special occasions. Good penmanship runs in my husband’s family. I have always enjoy receiving letters from my mother in-law. I can only hope that I’m as good at it one day as she has been all these years. What an interesting topic :)

  25. Oh Janean! Is there anything better than getting a letter from a dear friend? Seeing their familiar script across the envelope? I love it when I get the real deal!

  28. I have a desk that my computer is on but I have never had a desk that I could just sit and do writing on. My husband has a beautiful roll top desk that I guess I could go and write letters on. I do send out allot of cards but not many letters. I do mail letters snail mail but I type them on the computer.

  31. Love all of these writing desks you have featured today, Janean. I still enjoy writing in long hand notes to cheer another's heart...and I also enjoy going to collect the mail and finding a familiar bit of penmanship from someone dear who has written to cheer my heart! Thanks so much for today's post.

  32. I too love old writing desks. A few years ago I had a old craft table that I placed in front of the window in the loft at my home. I loved to spend hours in my "memory spot" looking down at my front yard and watching the kids play outside as I worked on my "memory books" (scrapebooks). I am hoping that one day I will be able to purchase a new craft/writing desk to place in my old "memory spot". Well maybe not a new craft/writing desk but an old craft/writing desk. I also love the old snail mail . . . love writing, making and sending cards.
    God bless you.

  34. Janean,
I wandered over here from Lilac Lane Cottage, and I'm enjoying your blog!

I have a writing desk, stocked with pretty stationary and an assortment of cards. I don't write notes by hand as often as I'd like, but it is a special task I enjoy from time to time. I can really see, now that you mention it, how technology has changed the way we correspond with each other. We're certainly loosing that personal touch.

    God's Peace,
    Melissa
