...off the internet scene. Since we moved to Old Sweetwater I upgraded to the HTC EVO smartphone. It does everything and is very entertaining...provided you're in a good 3G or 4G spot. We're not. Part of our retirement Mission Statement is to live as debt-free as possible, so no cable or internet; besides the *smart* phone would provide internet. Right? Right.

Anyway, until we either get a interior amplifier or I figure out phone posting, I'll be sporatic. I'll visit my sweet bloggy firends when I can. I miss you.

Crystals....

I have *a thing* for crystals. Give a crystal the tiniest amount of light and it'll sparkle its heart out. Old Sweetwater has crystal chandeliers...one for every room though they're not all up yet. This chandelier was an ugly brown kitchen light fixture at our lake community home. I panted it black, then dry-brushed it white to let the details show through. The 70's glass globes were removed and real crystals were draped everywhere! Who has any crystal? War...or Wire (Depending on Where You Live)

Once again we live in an area where people have an accent -- this time it's an Ozark accent. When we lived in Atlanta metro, I enjoyed the southern drawl, but the Ozark's accent is harsher sounding to my ears. *Wire* is pronounced by many here as *war.* Well, no matter how you say it, I adore decorating with it. Paper Dolls...Or Furniture?

As a child, I played for hours with paper dolls. Dreams of having lots of beautiful clothes and accessories would twirl around in my imagination. Sometimes wish I could just fold a few tabs and be instantly dressed - LOL! What about decorating? It would be great to have a grand selection of paper furniture and accessory that fit on a cardboard sample of one of my rooms. Sure, I have a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) program and it's very helpful, but it isn't the same as paper...nor as easy, simple or fast. Would you rather play paper dolls or paper decor?

Woman of Mystery

February has me thinking of Love...and Mystery! Being *a woman of mystery* is not in my nature, but it sounds so romantic. This woman would be smart (I.Q. and emotionally), elegant and confident. She'd speak more than one language fluently and she'd be organized. Yes, organized. Imagine a sexy, mysterious woman frantically digging in her floppy, over-stuffed handbag trying to find her car keys or contact case?
She'd be cosmopolitan (not the magazine; the definition). Occasionally she'd wear a vintage hat that shows one smokey eye and a hint of her ruby lips as she descends a grand staircase. What kind of home would she live in? What's one word you'd use to describe the woman of mystery?

This seems to be an enduring, international expression of love. *wink* If you had long hair (like I did), he pulled your braids. He may have passed you a note in class. He may have shared his lunch. How about the Valentine class party? Your heart fluttered as you opened each cheap white envelope looking for HIS valentine. You read it and re-read it, right? A *big spender* may give you a doll. No Man...or Woman...Is An Island

I'm not rich, but I've had my own island for the last 20-plus years. Okay, kitchen island, but how did I get along without one? I do EVERYTHING on our 6 foot island, (which my honey custom built). The one in our previous home was an 8-foot long, beautifully customized island, but it didn't have a deep prep sink with a garbage disposal like our current island, so that was my request. In the Lake Community home, my honey and I each have a sink with a whisper-quiet disposal (photos 2-5). I can't tell you what a luxury a second sink and disposal is! Old Sweetwater will be a challenge to outfit with an island, but somehow...even if it's tiny, I want one. Anyone else blessed with *owning an island?* p.s. Everything is going smoothly so far and we should be moved before the end of February!

The Tres Chic Tray

Trays are hard-working items we take for granted. Two of mine broke this summer so I went *on the hunt* for replacements. I had my internal check list:

Not too heavy, but sturdy enough to carry a crystal pitcher full of iced tea and four glasses or an entire coffee set with cups and saucers.
Not too small, but not so large it fills up the table.
Low maintenance finish so water rings won't show.
Simple, but attractive.
Neutral colored.
Comfortable handles.

*A Place For Everything...

...and everything in its place.* Drawers make life easier and help control clutter, especially if they're organized or specialized drawers. We have a warming drawer I use nearly every day. In our kitchen island we have a *skillet drawer* and *mixing bowl drawer* where we put all our stainless mixing bowls. Every one of our end tables and nightstands have at least three drawers. Drawers are just more *user-friendly* than cabinets to me. Am I the only one who dislikes using under-counter cabinets? Antique table; Spice drawer; Stair steps - grand idea! Thread drawer; Cutlery drawer; Under Step drawers; Island fridge drawers and Warming drawer.

* New start. New beginnings. Fresh. Clean slate.* These are the words that I use to describe each new year's beginning.

The New Year helps me ~~stop obsessing~~...er wipe the slate clean on the many times I acted like a *complete monkey* last year when I was trying for *suave.*
The New Year offers me to start the year not making unrealistic promises to myself ...like exercise.
In January the air even smells clean to me, so I want to breathe deeper and really RELAX (always a challenge).
The New Year calls out for me to try something NEW...like maybe ride an ostrich? Or not.
The New Year may give me opportunities to make new friends! Or not.
The New Year lets me be ~~depressed~~, ~~upset~~, ~~stressed~~ accepting about a few more ~~wrinkles~~ lines and ~~*old lady*~~ hands of experience.

Christmas Breakfast

Most Christmas morns we make breakfast before we open gifts. It's different each year - just whatever our taste buds dictate. Sometimes toast and coffee and other times, it's a large breakfast. This year I was leaning toward *gourmet.* Hot biscuits with Vermont butter and Pineapple Vanilla Preserves, smoked thick-sliced bacon and ham from Dean and Delucas. A spinach-mushroom quiche accompanied with fresh squeeze orange juice and Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.
Oh....sorry, let me answer the phone. "Hello? What??? The *HOT* sign is on at Krispy Kreme? Are you sure? When did it come on? Just NOW? I'm there!" Hey, the sign is red and green, which just screams *Christmas* to us! LOL!! Did you have breakfast on Christmas morning or not?

Nutcracker Ballet on Christmas Eve

A few years ago my mom, my granddaughter and I went to the Nutcracker ballet on Christmas Eve! We wore our very best and joined about 5,000 others (mostly female) at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia to watch *fluid beauty* that's been captivating audiences for fifty years.

We were thrilled at snow falling on the audience and the 1929 custom-built 3,622 piped organ rise up from the floor during intermission! It was my mother's first and last time to the ballet, but it holds such wonderful memories. Afterward, my honey and dad picked us up and took us to the Cheesecake Factory in Buckhead for early dinner!

I bought my first Nutcracker this year to be a gentle reminder of one very special afternoon. Anyone else collect nutcrackers or seen the ballet?

Christmas on the Plaza

We're very blessed to have a magnificent place to go...especially during Christmas. It's the Country Club Plaza (pictured below). It really is like the song, *City sidewalks busy sidewalks dressed in holiday style. In the air there's a feeling of Christmas. Children laughing; people passing; meeting smile after smile...* After walking in the brisk air, it's time to relax with a mug of hot cocoa and watch the other shoppers and horse-drawn carriages. Last Look at the Bedroom

This is the last look at the white bedroom for a while. You have been so sweet to encourage me. The bedroom has many small details left, but I want to enjoy searching for them. For example, I want a very narrow, but long *distressed* bench at the end of the bed for the coverlet at night - maybe in a chippy-weathered gray? I'll be sewing pillow shams; buying a white woolen throw for the foot of the bed; and accessories like those ice skates pictured below, etc. I left these coffee-colored sheets on the bed for the photos, but I'll use white most of the time.

Rustling Silk Pleats...

Silk taffeta is one of my favorite fabrics for drapes, but it can be pricey...up to $100.00 a yard! When I spotted this white, heavy ribbed silk taffeta at an absolute STEAL, I grabbed a bolt and bolted for the cutting table! I've wanted pleated edging on drapes for years, but dreaded the cost and labor-intensive-ness (is this a word?). This bedroom has one window, so no big deal. Also found this super-sheer silk organza (4th photo) so we can clearly watch the sunset, snow fall or stars sparkle! Six yards of heavy taffeta at $7.00 a yard -- Shhhh, don't tell this backwoods store. Three yards of embroidered silk organza at $7.00 a yard! The window's a north exposure, so I didn't line them. Anyone else think the *swish-sound of taffeta* is uber-feminine-sexy-romantic? Photo 5: I wanted an *old tin look* on the cornice with the old plaster look walls, so I used superfresco tin wallpaper and distressed it to look a little rusted.

I used extra wide bias tape where the pleat was sewn to the drape because silk taffeta ravels...badly!

Snow Queen?

It is a wonderful feeling when you actually look forward to entering a room. Our master-guest bedroom is that room for me. As I gaze at the vintage, sparkling crystal chandelier and observe each detail, I feel like a queen in my own itsy-bitsy, teeny-tiny, microscopic kingdom...a snow queen with all this white. Read my sidebar: white calms me. Calm is good because I'm one of those people whose brain seldom turns off. I'm always creating or trying to solve problems...so calm is a daily goal. Is anyone else like this?
We decided to *gut* the small walk-in closet and build it out with double rods and several shelves. It holds an amazing amount of clothes and shoes now. Yay! Photos: 1. Metal crown and crackled urn on vintage wooden wall hanging I've had *forever;* 2. Closet build-out; 3 and 4. Crystal Lamps (very heavy) I got on clearance for $47.00 each instead of $300.00 each! 5. I used a terry cloth towel! 9. Winter tree candle holders that add a wintry glow on my wish list.

The Armoire is Done!!

We bought this nearly eight-foot armoire nine years ago. It had a cherry finish then. A couple of months ago I began the process of painting and antiquing the carved details on it. I sewed the curtains out of soft 300 count cotton sheered onto two spring curtain rods to add a soft back-drop. Since we don't have a linen closet in the en-suite bedroom (which eventually will be the guest bedroom-bath), I decided to use the armoire. Apothecary jars will replace the black/white boxes that I had laying around, for bar soap and extra toiletries (shown below). Later the extra set of sheets went in one of the smaller drawers. These are my old *work* towels, NOT my fluffiest-best towels, but I was excited to get photos. Hope you like it. Anyone else have a *working armoire?* Cost: Floor vent $21.00; Paint $15.00; Two spring rods-$8.00; Fabric-sale $8.00! Apothecary jars range from $19-$49.00 each, depending on size and where you buy them.

More Of Our White Bedroom

I know it's near Thanksgiving, but please indulge me in showing our white bedroom in the next few posts (though we're still doing finishing touches). Click here to see what it began as when we bought the home and scroll down. I'll start with our autumn/Thanksgiving decor for that room. I adore those white pumpkins, so I bought this on which was originally $20, on sale for $7. The $40 wreath was on sale for $12.00. I had extra bittersweet, so no cost. Yay! The vase is one of two I purchased eight years ago and the column is VINTAGE - over 20 years old. The wreath's the only color in our all white bedroom. Next month I plan on setting a small Christmas tree on the column. What about those bargains? P.S. There's a rumor around the cottage that there will be a give-away in December!!!!!!

Okay, did I happen to mention the pumpkin is an ~~impostor~~, ~~fake~~, ~~phony~~, ~~faux~~ isn't real? It's a FUNkin. The best thing is I can use it over and over...year after year. Double yay!

Pleasant Pheasant

I was given a pheasant pelt (complete with the tail feathers) about 25 years ago. I mounted it on a grape wreath vine and embellished it with bittersweet, magnolia leaves and other autumnal foliage...I was enamored! From then on I wanted pheasant feathers in my decor. Though long, quality feathers can be costly, they are much more reasonable and available today than all those years ago. Does anyone else like or use pheasant feathers? I Adore Harvest Tables

I've always wanted a narrow antique harvest table IN the center of the kitchen as a place to eat and prepare food. It reminds me in history, how servants would serve dinner in the formal dining room to the master of the house, but ate in the kitchen at the *harvest* table. It seems honest, unpretentious and wholesome to me. By definition, a harvest table should be six to eight feet long and usually has hinged drop-leaves and/or drawers. Here are some nice examples. I Don't Ever Want It To End

My favorite time of day is about 90 minutes before sunset, especially in autumn! The long shadows move me emotionally. The air is *clean* and colors are brilliant. I don't ever want the day to end. If it's not too cold, I enjoy eating things outdoors like homemade pumpkin soup from a fab pumpkin tureen. Otherwise, a mug of hot cider will do! And, I want firelight either by a fire pit, Chimnea or candles...lots of candles. Do you like early evening? Do you enjoy meals outside in autumn?

The Everly Brothers came out with a song years ago, *All I Have to do is Dream.* We have a farm not too far from our lake home that we enjoy driving by in the autumn. I'm talkin' burlap! The stuff was still in the bag I purchased several months ago. I meant to use it, but now can't remember how. Around the Kitchen Table

Many nights an aunt, uncle and my parents would *put on a pot of coffee* and visit around the kitchen table while my cousins and I would be in the living room. As the kids would play, laugh at our newest jokes and catch up on the past year, we could smell the coffee mixed with cigarette smoke. It was the 1960's. Everyone smoked. We didn't have seat belts in our cars either. Neither did we have free long-distance, so we only heard news through an occasional letter or *gossip* from other visiting relatives.
After we kids were put to bed, it would make me feel that everything was safe and right with the world hearing the pleasant drone of distant adult voices mingled with the clink of cups on saucers and scrapes of chairs on linoleum. Here are examples of the progression of dinette sets. Does anyone else have those type of memories? Chrome set 1950's; Fiberglass Chairs from the 1960's; Swivel dinette 1970's; Wicker popular 1980's; Glass and ornate iron 1990's; Arts & Crafts with bench 1990's; Banquette seating early 2000's and now Counter height dinettes are all the rage. Naw, those people aren't my family, but they are a great representation!

We're getting our lake community house ready to sell. It's just too big. We're not sure if we'll try to sell it now or in the Spring, but we're fixing and *staging* our home. It's a big undertaking. Anyway, I needed a new floor lamp to bring in more light, but have found the humble, hard working floor lamp of yesterday has been replaced by the uber-chic artistic floor lamp of today. What Size Cup?

When I shop for coffee cups, the first thing I try is the handle for comfort and balance. Then I make sure the cup's not going to be too heavy when it's full of steaming coffee or cocoa....and I always want a saucer! I usually buy a set of four or six which don't match my everyday dishes. They can't be too small, but I'm not into *bowls* of coffee either. My dad's favorite cup was an ugly, stained plastic travel mug. My mom's was glass stemmed mug. Mine came from Williams Sonoma (but the saucers recently got chipped - waaahhh!). Do you like mugs or cups? Large or delicate? Show me some coffee LUV!!!!

A lot of people have *a thing* for the Chaise Lounge. When I see one I imagine myself lounging on it with a grande Williams Sonoma cup of perfect cafe latte and a ~~good~~, ~~great~~, fantastic book. Relaxation in a chair! Yep, that's what a chaise lounge is. Wouldn't it be great if they had one that would fit into the shower? How do you pronounce it? "Shays," "Chase," or "Shez?"

I'm past child-bearing years, but still like looking and shopping for *baby stuff* for my friends. Do you? Maybe you're expecting or someone close to you is? Buy a home, along with most of its furniture. Swoon for white hydrangeas.

2. Take a bedroom that the precious, previous owner painted *flesh.* (sorry about the blur; my arms ached from moving furniture).

3. Did I mention the previous owner stuck the wallpaper seams down with bathroom silicone caulk (UNDER the flesh-colored PAINT)? You know that shiny, bright, rubbery white stuff guaranteed to never come off and also repels paint? Yeah that's it in the photo below the tape. It was every 18 inches. *sigh* So, masking tape a line and texture above.

4. Be inspired by dried hydrangeas. Take down fan and super-cheap trim. Put up vintage chandelier with real Austrian crystals. Add wooden library panels and custom trim. Put in wide plank pine floors.

5. Paint woodwork hydrangea and the walls a coordinating coffee color. Don't bother with a comforter, wall art or permanent drapes -- it's just so you can live with it until....WHITE! Glorious Norwegian-inspired white!

6. Behr is my hero.

7. Low luster covers in one coat. It took maybe 30 minutes to paint.

8. The second gloss coat made my heart sing.

We painted the walls and ceiling "Mountain Gray" a stone-gray white. It's still curing (as is all the furniture I'm painting white). We haven't even put the chandelier plate back on the ceiling or plug covers on, but as things dry I'll post the progress if you'd like. Am I crazy for painting it ALL WHITE???

Fox Hunting? Really?

A friend's parents owned a fox hunt-fox run farm. My honey and I were invited to witness a fox run so we drove the 12 hours to experience something new. We weren't going to hunt, just observe. It was not what I expected. No-sirree-bob.
We arrived with our host to see 8 other "good ol' boys" sitting around a campfire in their camouflage; their dogs off somewhere barking. They had one of those portable deep fryers going. I was politely offered a lawn chair and then a fare of bread, coffee, fried chicken, fried potatoes, boiled corn on the cob and fried squirrel...WHAT? Yes, squirrel. "Wasn't this a FOX hunt?" Then I noticed the old pickup still *fresh* with the day's ~~killing~~ food on the tailgate. My stomach lurched, but not wanting to appear *snooty* I accepted the chicken knowing it had been fried with the ~~filthy rodent~~ squirrel....besides they had rifles nearby.
It was great chicken and thank the Lord we didn't get sick later. Has anyone eaten squirrel or been on a REAL fox hunt?

I was expecting hunters on horses not hunters with horsepower. I was expected cozy as in the bed, not cozy "campin' far" (camping fire). I pictured a proper English meal, not meal on wheels! "What about the poor foxes?" you may ask.....oh, they were perfectly safe!

I know summer is almost over...and call me crazy but I look forward to picnics in the Autumn more than any other time of year. We have a large picnic basket, but wondered about a new one since mine's been relegated to holding cleaning rags. I found some baskets that may inspire you to plan an autumn picnic. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, it won't be long until temperatures cool off. Today there are blankets with plastic backs - so no dampness - and I bring classical piano music to play in the background while we eat our feast. Any other Autumn picnic-preferable people? Garden Carts or Buggies?

When we lived in Atlanta everyone referred to the store's shopping carts as *buggies.* It got me wondering if my Southern friends say garden buggies instead of garden carts. I'll have to ask. Anyway, I've always had one and have used them for painting baseboard and sanding/staining floors MORE than gardening. Here are some garden cart ideas and the goal of having them! Anyone else a garden cart (buggy) fan? Mine is like the last humble photo, but it has paint splatters on it and duct tape now holding one wheel together - ugh! :) And no, these are not my gardens (only in my dreams).

Hammocks have been around for at least a thousand years. About four years ago I bought a woven, cotton hammock and hung it between two trees at Old Sweetwater (like the first photo)....then I did NOT move out of it for....oh...three days. Okay, I slept inside at night and I couldn't find a way to balance food and drink in it, so I ate at the patio table, but other than the necessities of life, I was in that hammock. It's gotten worn, so by next summer I plan to replace it. I'm not sure if I'll go with a woven again or nylon? Here are some images to inspire you. Gingerbread

Gingerbread is a term for a type of ornate architectural design which adorns houses. It became popular in the mid-1800's when the steam-powered scroll saw and lathe became available and could reproduce the look faster and cheaper. The name is said to have come from the Grimm's fairytale, Hansel and Gretel. I've never lived in a *Gingerbread* house, but I adore cottages that are set apart by their curly-cue, fancy, bric-a-brac, ornate latticework. And, oh how I enjoy a warm gingerbread cake with lemon curd! Anyone live in a *gingerbread house?*

Silhouette Decor

Fourth was my worst grade for many reasons, but the one *highlight* of that school year was when the teacher made silhouettes of each student. I remember just staring at it....and though it had no features, I thought it was beautiful. In fact, I still have it. By a miracle, it was one of the two things my mother kept from my childhood. (She didn't save things)

In the English language, *blue* often represents the human emotion of sadness. The color blue makes many of us happy! I adore the color of denim. The ocean's blue is so soothing to me. Navy makes me feel *grounded* and secure. Azure is cheerful and Icy blue feels clean! Here are some examples of this wonderful color. Is there blue in your home? How does blue make you feel?

Blueberries in Black Peppered Juice

1 bottle of sparkling grape juice

1/4 cup sugar (or to taste)

1 teaspoon real vanilla

1/2 - 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

3 cartons (6 ounce) blueberries, rinse-drain

Twists of lemon peel

1. Pour juice and sugar into small pan and boil until reduced by about half or about 15 minutes. STIR OFTEN. Add vanilla and pepper and let cool.

2. Put blueberries in a bowl and pour Syrup mixture over them.

3. Chill airtight for at least 2 hours or up to 1 day.

4. Serve in small dessert bowls or glasses garnished with twists of lemon peel.

Gone To Pot

There is an idiom to use when something has gone wrong or doesn't work anymore: We say, "It's gone to pot." It comes from the fact that in history, when food was scarce, people used the bone, fat and scraps to make a meal in a pot. Well, I'm not talking about what doesn't work, but what DOES - the pot rack! It comes and goes in trends, but in working kitchens, it is a staple. They come in wood, but metal is the most used. There are lots of people who make their own.
I used to have one like photo 5, but gave it to a friend. Now we have a lighted one (still in the box) for Old Sweetwater that I need to paint white. Do you have a pot rack?

Sofa, Couch, Chesterfield, Divan, Davenport...

Depending on where you grew up and what era it was, you probably use one of these names in the title for the larger piece of furniture you sit (or lie) on. I grew up saying *couch,* but now say *sofa* because it seems....I don't know....less harsh-sounding and more hip, modern and chic.
I've been casually looking for the perfect sofa. I'm not trying to impress anyone, nor make a statement...I just want COMFORTABLE, but cottage-stylish. It's nice to have friends help keep an eye out for you too. Mary found a simple casual sofa.....

Fran found formal....very formal....

Suzie found a ~~seriously~~ ~~silly~~ sofa that lights up....why it does? We don't know.

Then Willow found the organic...as in cork. Call me *old fashioned* but I like a BACK on my ~~couch~~ sofa.

Megan even found a METAL ~~torture~~ ~~device~~....divan.

Friends, I sooo appreciate your help, but I just want something like this......

Uh....Kitty, it looks VERY comfy, but to have to lint-brush myself after sitting on my ~~davenport~~ sofa...and I don't have a cat? No.

Splish Splash I Was Takin' A Bath....

In 1958 Bobby Darin released the hit song, "Splish Splash" (I Was Takin' A Bath). People today still sing that catchy little tune. It's FUN...and how many songs have been about soap, suds, and bathing on a Saturday night? At Old Sweetwater we're planning on enlarging what's now the hall bath into the Master Bath, so I've been getting inspiration. Here are some images of the often overlooked Bath Room! Few things are more soothing than a garden. I'm also a fan of interiors having a garden feel. A garden interior isn't fussy or stiff. It's organic. It begs you to take your garden hat off and drink some tea in the shade of an enormous oak tree. Let's see how *garden* translates indoors. Does anyone have a utility sink? Do you use it often? Married Forty Years Today.....Ruby Anniversary.

Today is our 40th wedding anniversary. How's that possible when my mind tells me I'm barely 40 years old...I said my MIND...not the calendar. Ha! The 40th is the RUBY year. Yay! So if I could do anything - within reason - I would....

Get on a RUBY palm (#1) and see if I can rent a classic RUBY colored convertible (#2). Drive to the nearest RUBY'S Diner (uh...Texas? Woohoo! #3) and have one double huge RUBY milkshake with two straws (#4).
We'd drive home with the radio blaring & then I'd soak in a RUBY tub (#5).
Next, I'd swath on RUBY lipstick (#6) hoping for a Marilyn Monroe look (#7) rather than a RUBY Ann Boxcar look (#8).
After I put my RUBY high heels on (#9) my honey and I would dance by the lake under RUBY lanterns (#10) and stroll home in the moonlight.
We'd change into comfy clothes (#11) and hit RUBY Tuesdays for a late salad and dessert (haven't been there in ages #12)....and then see where it goes from there. Yes, that would be a day fit for a king or queen to me (#13).
