No Man...or Woman...Is An Island

I'm not rich, but I've had my own island for the last 20-plus years. Okay, kitchen island, but how did I get along without one? I do EVERYTHING on our 6 foot island, (which my honey custom built). The one in our previous home was an 8-foot long, beautifully customized island, but it didn't have a deep prep sink with a garbage disposal like our current island, so that was my request. In the Lake Community home, my honey and I each have a sink with a whisper-quiet disposal (photos 2-5). I can't tell you what a luxury a second sink and disposal is! Old Sweetwater will be a challenge to outfit with an island, but somehow...even if it's tiny, I want one. Anyone else blessed with *owning an island?* p.s. Everything is going smoothly so far and we should be moved before the end of February!

  1. Janean,

Oh your moving house are you? I'm currently trying to plan my kitchen which will include an island. In Ireland we tend to only use islands for preparation and nearly always put the sink in front of the window for the views :) Thanks for sharing

    All things nice...

  2. I adore island benches but have never had the room for one in my house.

Love all those pictures but especially and perhaps not surprisingly the white kitchens!

  3. I love an island, but in order to have one, we'd have to build a bigger kitchen! ;) Yours is beautiful...and congratulations on how quickly you are getting moved!

  9. I do not have an island, Janean. But any one of these would be a welcome addition to a kitchen space for sure! Glad things are going smoothly!

  10. I love my island. When we added a new kitchen onto this house that was the one thing I really wanted. It is a big island with seats that slip underneath. I use it for food prep AND for serving and just about everything else. My KitchenAid mixer is hidden away behind a door and it pops out and up for using and then clicks away for storage.

We have had islands before but this is the best one ever...and soon, I think we will be moving too and leaving it behind. sigh..

I hope you can fit one in and I know you will love it. I loved your old one that your hubster built. Gorgeous piece. Hugs- Diana

  11. Wow that is a beautiful island and so much is built into it. I have a island by now where as pretty as yours. I don't think I could live without one either.
I am so glad you are almost through this last hurdle. YaY!
I love that your island is white. I love white kitchens.

  12. I love my island although it is not very big. It is where we sometimes eat, I decorate cakes and cookies, roll out dough, and set up buffets!

  13. Love you Island post. I was watching for it. :-) I LOVE YOUR ISLAND!! OH my...SO big...glad you have a roomy kitchen to hold such a wonderful addition for workspace. WOOT! Makes mine look like a "baby island". :-) :-) But I am loving it nonetheless. I would love to have a 2nd sink - awesome. But it works for the space allowed. Enjoyed your Island post today, and I am SO glad things are moving along for you. YAY! Best wishes for a smooth move, Janean. I hope all things are transferred safely and there are NO casualties of anything you hold special or sentimental!!!

  14. I love my 6ft island, but it is as it was when we bought the house. There are lovely pot drawers, but no sink. I'd love a sink in the island and a small book case at the end. It would such a treat to have a custom island!

  15. Yes, I love my island too. My hubby told our cabinet maker exactly what he wanted and it turned out great. I'm not the cook in our house but having the island is a great hang out spot plus my grandson gets on his stool, as he calls it, and plays for hours with his play-dooh.

  16. I really wish I had a kitchen with room for an island.... I have an awfully small galley kitchen. All I can do is cross my fingers for the next home!

  21. I've never had the privilege of having an island, but always wished for one. Enjoy yours! I am so thankful for you that you have been able to get your house sold and the move will soon be over! Have a good weekend!

  22. I'm in a borrowed house aka rental and have just experienced having an island for the first time. Love it! Mine doesn't have a sink though and no outlets, what were they thinking?! I've added to my want list. Can't wait to see your new one! Thanks for sharing the pretty pictures.

  23. I've always wanted one too, and yours is lovely. Our kitchen is small, and with 8 people coming and going, it seems even smaller :-)

    Good luck with the move!

  27. Janean,
What a wonderful prep area! You have a very talented husband. . .and one who is in touch with your kitchen needs. Our galley ~style kitchen On Crooked Creek doesn't allow for such a luxury. My son's home has an island with butcher block top. Nice! Oh~h~h the pies one could make there! Thanks for sharing and for your sweet comments and visit recently!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  28. I would love an island in our tiny square of a kitchen, but it would have to be a small one. We live in a town full of tiny houses and our home, though only 10 years old, is only just over 1200 square feet! Still, it's our home and I love it. I have been eyeing islands for a while, but it will have to be narrow to not take up so much space. The ones you featured here are lovely. :)

  29. No I have no space for an island inside our house.
Maybe outside, our house stands near the water;)

    Have a nice week

  32. Hi Janean!

    Love your island! I don't have one, but have always wanted one - maybe someday . . . ***dreaming*** . . .

Hope the move goes smoothly - such and exciting time for you!

  33. We have an island -- and in our tiny kitchen that's saying a lot but I can't imagine the kitchen without it!!!!

  34. I had one in the house we had up north but now I don't have room in this kitchen. I sure do miss it.
    Good luck on the move.
    Have a great day.

  35. My kitchen is way too small for an island, BUT I'm thinking one big improvement I could make would be to make deep drawers out of one cabinet for pots and pans. I would no longer have to get on my hands and knees to search for things I don't use often!

  36. Can a kitchen island ever be big enough and still practical? When I designed our farm home, I wanted a five-burner gas cooktop in the island. I love it! I never want another stove! I made this one 4'x6', but if I ever design the next house, it will be longer with two smaller cooktops.

  37. How exciting to hear you are moving. Best wishes and I hope it turns out to be the best island yet.

These islands are fabulous and yes, they are such a useful component in the kitchen.
Much luck with the move, hope it goes smoothly for you.
